A new study will show you that the new and trendy e – cigarettes are not as safe as you thought. They contain acetone, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, benzopyrene as well as silicate and several metal particles. According to the German Research Center, Heildelberg, the e-cigarettes are called “an uncontrolled experiment with consumers”.
E-cigarettes are filled with volatile organic substances such as propylene glycol, flavors and nicotine and are not emission-free. These substances are all emitted as mist or aerosol into the air. Study also shows that these cigarettes produce fewer ultrafine particles than the regular ones, but these substances may be inhaled by non-smokers. According to German Research Center, Heildelberg, these second-hand exposures to the emission cannot be excluded. Study also shows that these ultrafine liquid particles of less than 2.5 micrometer in diameter may penetrate deeply into the lungs.
The main findings of the study are:
- The e-cigarettes, beside glycol (the main ingredient), also emit: nicotine, volatile organic compounds, acetone, flavors, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, formaldehyde, benzo(a)pyrene. There is also various metals present, as well as silicate.
- The particles are in size between 100 and 600 nanometers which is similar to the particle size of regular cigarettes. The levels of the most harmful substances are lower than the regular cigarettes smoke, but they accumulate in indoor air.
All people know, of course, that inhaling unknown substances is unhealthy. But it is good to know that e-cigarettes produce harms so people will be able to take precautions around their children. Another thing that we are sure will happen is the fact that the state will soon disallow smoking e-cigarettes on private properties.
